Mechanistic Explanations and Deliberate Misrepresentations
2020
The philosophy of mechanisms has developed rapidly during the last 30 years. As mechanisms-based explanations (MBEs) are often seen as an alternative to nomological, law-based explanations, MBEs could be relevant in IS. We begin by offering a short history of mechanistic philosophy and set out to clarify the contemporary landscape. We then suggest that mechanistic models provide an alternative to variance and process models in IS. Finally, we highlight how MBEs typically contain deliberate misrepresentations. Although MBEs have recently been advocated as critical realist (CR) accounts in IS, idealizations (deliberate misrepresentations) seem to violate some fundamental tenets of CR and rese…
Assessment of the interpretability of data mining for the spatial modelling of water erosion using game theory
2021
Abstract This study undertook a comprehensive application of 15 data mining (DM) models, most of which have, thus far, not been commonly used in environmental sciences, to predict land susceptibility to water erosion hazard in the Kahorestan catchment, southern Iran. The DM models were BGLM, BGAM, Cforest, CITree, GAMS, LRSS, NCPQR, PLS, PLSGLM, QR, RLM, SGB, SVM, BCART and BTR. We identified 18 factors usually considered as key controls for water erosion, comprising 10 factors extracted from a digital elevation model (DEM), three indices extracted from Landsat 8 images, a sediment connectivity index (SCI) and three other intrinsic factors. Three indicators consisting of MAE, MBE, RMSE, and…
Distributive justice and evolution : towards a science of equality
2015
The paper offers reasons why distributive justice scholars should be interested in evolutionary science: it can help us understand, for example, the genetic and subsistence factors influencing our judgements about fair distributions, where our sense of property may come from, why freedom matters to certain creatures, and why we have fraternal and egalitarian sentiments and unequal societies.

In the reply it is argued, first, that the argument from low probability does not work in the absence of additional assumptions. Second, arguments from laboratory, vestigial structures, and imitating nature in technology are reversed against ID. Third, the question of telling artefacts from natural objects is discussed in the context of the search for explanation. Finally, the neglect of the requirements for an explanation to be non-vacuous on the part of ID theorists is said to drive ID towards fideism rather than science.
Normativity, moral realism, and unmasking explanations
2004
Moral Projectivism must be able to specify under what conditions a certain inner response counts as a moral response. I argue, however, that moral projectivists cannot coherently do so because they must assume that there are moral properties in the world in order to fix the content of our moral judgements. To show this, I develop a number of arguments against moral dispositionalism, which is, nowadays, the most prom- ising version of moral projectivism. In this context, I call into question both David Lewis' dispositionalist account of colour and Chistine Korsgaard's procedural realism.
Study of the benzene⋅N2 intermolecular potential-energy surface
2003
The intermolecular potential-energy surface pertaining to the interaction between benzene and N2 is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Accurate intermolecular interaction energies are evaluated for the benzene–N2 van der Waals complex using the coupled cluster singles and doubles including connected triples [CCSD(T)] method and the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set extended with a set of 3s3p2d1f1g midbond functions. After fitting the energies to an analytic function, the intermolecular Schrödinger equation is solved to yield energies, rotational constants, and Raman-scattering coefficients for the lowest intermolecular levels of several benzene–N2 isotopomers. Experimentally, intermolecula…

The autobiographical reflection on school learning makes it possible to explain how personal life guidelines are loading teaching activity with experiences. Educational time does not consist only of a linear narration, but works as the evocation of temporal and spatial memories of an explanation of the present. Personal life is intertwined with school reflection to give meaning to what we decide from teaching
